Entry requirements. You'll need to apply for a taxi driver's licence from the licensing unit of your local council or from Transport for London (TfL). Taxi Driver Survey 2016. Published: August 25, 2016. We’ve been busy collating the results of our 2016 Taxi Driver Survey We asked over a thousand taxi drivers across the country a range of questions. The questions were to collect meaningful taxi driver data – from the average number of fares they take a day to waiting times. UBER taxi is already King of Glasgow. He's always just giving taxi drivers £10 for a £6 fare. Why do taxi folk deserve tips more than any other.

How Much Does A Glasgow Taxi Driver Earn A Year

Thanks Jupiter, interesting. My understanding of this is that the decision to raise fare rates was always going to be made as the council had an agreed formula with taxi organisations for calculating cost increases. Looks like the council's initial refusal was just posturing, considering the cost of running a taxi had increased by at least 7% over the past year. From talking to taxi drivers, the main cause of the rise is increased fuel costs. There is also the increasing problems with potholes damaging cabs and this resulting in higher insurance costs. Another common complaint from taxi drivers is the rising competition from private hire cars, although the public may increasingly turn to this cheaper alternative if they see the cost of Hackneys as being too high.

Not a good time to be a black cab owner/driver. One good recent (or at least recently-advertised) development is the dropping of many boundary charges for phone booking of taxis which will go beyond the Glasgow city boundary, especially to the posh suburbs. Of interest, I found the following fare guide, approximate fares from Glasgow city centre to:. Glasgow Airport £19.80.

Glasgow

Edinburgh Airport £85.00. Edinburgh City £99.00. Loch Lomond from £40.00. Stirling £51.00. Gleneagles £93.00.

St Andrews £141.00. Fort William £205.00. Oban £182.00 GG.

I think GG has already answered your questions, Joop. If public sector employees had to pay for the raw materials used in their jobs, and those raw materials had increased dramatically in price, then the situation would be comparable to taxi drivers, but that isn't the case. The rise in fuel costs and the disgraceful condition of our roads impinge directly on the running costs of a taxi. I have to say, though, that the complaint about private hire cars isn't a new one, and doesn't, in my opinion, justify any rise in black hack charges. Unless one's livelihood depends on it.I doubt anybody would understand.

My husband is a white seven seater taxi at Glasgow Airport.their outgoings are quite immense.from licence plates to bar security charges to enable them to pick up passengers from global arrivals and everything else in between.and of course we do have everything else inbetween.i.e. Ash clouds, air traffic control strikes. I could go on but it wouldn't be of particular interest to anybody. Every city in the world tries to ensure that people arriving at their city receive the utmost in safety and security. The only way to do this is by licenced drivers and cars with thorough police and social searches into their background.

The best always costs more.because of the costs of ensuring safety and security.especially in the times we live. Colin,I take your point but plenty of other businesses my own included have the same problem.Gas,lekky and all the rest of it and if I raise prices Im at a bigger risk of losing clients. My friend who runs his own firm has invested heavily in BMW 5 Series and E Class Mercs is taking a terrible hit with his chauffeur business, charging approx £1.80 a mile when diesel was below a pound a litre and still just now when its £1.40. The 7% rise the taxi owners have been given does seem a bit generous and in effect is giving them a cushion that other busineses dont dont have. When I was living in Nazereth we used to get a copy of the Jerusalem Post in English. The article about the Jewish doctor in Belfast was held to be true, and reported as so.

Gunman ' are youse a caferlik or a protistint?' Doctor ' Im a Jew, Iam a doctor!!!' Gunman pauses; 'are youse a caferlik or a protistint Jew???'

Another article on how Jews fared around the world held Glasgow to be the least anti Semitic city in the world due to laws discriminating favourably for Jews. One wag wrote in a comment saying the Catholics and Protestants were to busy hating each other to even bother with Jews. One of the tightest Scotsmen I ever met in my whole life was a wee Glasgow Jew called Jimmy Reid; don't ask.

We worked together on C130 Hercules overhauls at Marshall's in Cambridge where we were supplied with good digs for lowest rate anywhere at 6 pounds a week. Jimmy parked his VW bus; in winter, outside our digs and run an extention cable from the kitchen window to save the 6 quid. We were on a couple of hundred a week back then. He'd come and pick us up at the pub after closing and charge less than the taxis.

But we'd to make sure we kept our feet aff his bed. As a matter of historical interest, ma Da's cousins had a fleet o Glesga taxis at wan time. O'Hara's Taxis.

It used tae be wan o their taxis that wis on display in the Transport Museum. Ah never met the cousins, but their Da, auld Uncle Davy, used tae bung me a hauf croon whenever he visited. We wur the poor wans. My Dad used to drive for John O'Hara, back in the late 50s early 60s. He also worked for John Patterson before buying his own taxi in 1967. My dad was one of 50 new licenses that the city granted. John Paton the dealer didn't have enough taxis to supply, so a bunch of owner/drivers went down to Birmingham to collect them straight from the factory.

Not as much as I did when he told me he was Jewish. Couldn't believe it; I thought he was pullin' ma leg. But he wisnae.

I was staying with a friend somewhere on a Kibbutz, cant remember where. During a conversation theis guy kept shaking his head and looking in my direction. ' whas up' I asked' Shaking s head, replied; Hebrew wi a Glesga accent, not possible!!!' When leaving the country I was going through the screened search procedure before entering the plane. ' are you frae Glesga?'

Says the security officer. 'Am frae Govan' says I. 'Am frae Glesga as weel' says he, 'am no goin tae search ye bit wid ye promise me yer no carrying a chib ontae the plane' Verbatim. A previous decision by Glasgow Council to refuse a request by Glasgow Taxi owners for a 7% increase has been reversed which will now mean a bigger than inflation rise in fares. Is this justified?

Fuel up 40% insurance up 50% vat up to 20 percent Take home pay down 40% don't think people realise cost of running a taxi-twice a year tests (far stricter than any MOT). Council hikes test fees up 45% now that's a scandal not a measly 7%.

So this rise does not offset increased expenses. Five people in a hack can travel over most of the city cheaper than a bus!!!

The Evening Times has a front page story today (Weekend Times) saying that Glasgow taxi drivers are pushing for an increase in fares of 9.1%, rather than the 6.5% which has already been agreed by the council. The reasons given are similar to those explained by 'fed up driver' above. Conveniently, the ET has rounded up the drivers' 9.1% request to 10%, to make a more catching headline. It doesn't mention Glasgow has the cheapest Taxis in any British city at 247th most expensive council tariff, also Glasgow city council raised all licence and twice yearly testing charges by up to 60% to bring them in line with other councils. Years of the council awarding a low tariff rise has seen Glasgow Taxi tariff fall behind all other areas but outgoings are the same. This week the Evening Times price has increased by 25%!!!!!
